The Emotional Capacity Reservoir

Demands drain it. Recovery restores it. Leadership depends on it.

Emotional capacity is a single shared reservoir, not separate tanks for work and everything else — and it's finite. Five specific demands drain it. Only three specific kinds of recovery refill it. Overspray isn't a character flaw that shows up when a leader is depleted — it's simply what happens, predictably, once demand crosses the capacity line.

How it works

The Five Capacity Drains are cognitive overload, emotional labor, unresolved tension, chronic stress, and personal life load — all pulling from the exact same reservoir regardless of which category they technically belong to. Above the Capacity Threshold, a leader runs on clarity, presence, patience, regulation, and precision. Cross below it, and the same leader runs on reactivity, fragmented thinking, a sharper tone, withdrawal, and emotional leakage — which is Overspray, draining straight out of the tank onto whoever's closest. The Three Recovery Inputs are what actually refill the reservoir: Micro Recovery (small resets through the day), Macro Recovery (real time off, not just scheduled breaks), and Emotional Recovery (specifically processing what's been weighing on you, not just resting from it). Skipping any one of the three leaves the tank running on a slower, incomplete refill.

In practice

A team lead handling a difficult personal situation at home, a demanding sprint, and an unresolved conflict with a peer is drawing on all five drains simultaneously, even though only one of them looks 'work-related' on paper. He takes his lunch break but scrolls his phone through it — Micro Recovery without the other two types — and wonders by Thursday why he's still running short with his team despite 'resting.' The tank was never actually refilling; only one input was running.

Something to sit with

Of the three recovery types — Micro, Macro, and Emotional — which one do you actually practice, and which one have you been quietly skipping?
