The Five Dimensions of Presence™
The book's flagship framework — five dimensions of how a leader's presence shows up.
Click a dimension above to see what it means.
Presence isn't one behavior — it's a five-channel signature: Intentional, Ambient, Relational, Digital, and Cultural. Together they explain why two leaders can say the exact same words in the exact same meeting and be experienced completely differently by their teams, and why "I didn't mean it that way" rarely undoes what already landed days or weeks earlier.
How it works
Intentional Presence is showing up on purpose rather than by accident — pausing before engaging, regulating your own baseline before you walk in, deciding what you want people to feel before you decide what to say. Ambient Presence is your reputation and influence when you're not even in the room: the standards people quietly assume you expect, the climate you leave behind after you walk out of it. Relational Presence is the depth of trust that determines whether people bring you the real story or the softened, filtered version they think you want to hear. Digital Presence is the version of you that lives in email tone, response time, and meeting energy — for a lot of teams, it's the version of their leader they interact with most in any given week. And Cultural Presence is what you reward, what you quietly tolerate, and how you behave the one time things actually go wrong, which becomes the template everyone else copies without being told to.
In practice
Two directors announce the same reorganization using nearly identical words in nearly identical meetings. One pauses, makes eye contact, and follows up personally with each team lead over the next two days — strong Intentional and Relational presence. The other sends a rushed email between back-to-back meetings and lets it ripple through the org chart unexplained — weak Digital and Ambient presence. Same message, same intent, same news. Six weeks later, two noticeably different cultures have formed around it.
Something to sit with
Of the five dimensions, which one is most likely to be carrying your overspray without your noticing it — Ambient, in a room you've already left, or Digital, in a message you sent in thirty seconds and never thought about again?
